FAIK OFF

Eine – wie ich meine – unglaublich gute Einordnung zum Thema KI vom Fotografen Rankin:

F A K E I S T H E N E W N O R M A L

WOW

That was a pretty INCREDIBLE response to my last post.

THANK YOU

Of course, I was just being provocative (and also a little 🐥 tiny bit ironic).

It was a statement, to see what people would say. The image before is to promote my new exhibition and magazine: FAIK, which will be out later this month.

You can catch a taster of it in a mini magazine section of HUNGER, which is out now. FAIK the actual magazine and show, will be FREE, as that feels like the right way to do it.

Keep an eye out here for updates and details.

---

Over the last nine months, I’ve taught myself how to use very simple AI systems, to make images and to write or rewrite. I’ve been using MidJourney and ChatGPT, nothing too complicated, nothing that a 12-year-old couldn’t use efficiently.

It’s been a weird journey, and one I go into pretty deeply in FAIK. So worth checking out when it comes out.

I know it’s a hot topic, one that sparks debate, discussion, and quite a bit of anger from both sides. But it’s definitely a conversation that is worth having.

I started this because I didn’t want to be someone who critiques AI without really understanding it.

---

But now I do understand it and if I’m honest, it really frightens me. Not just in a vague, sci-fi, distant-future kind of way. In a very real, right- now, this-is-already-happening kind of way. Surprisingly, this doesn’t really apply to me as a photographer, because I believe the human experience of photographing other humans will be cherished, if not celebrated, more than ever in the future. Plus, how could we stop taking photographs when everyone and their granny has a camera, and thinks they’re pretty good at using it?

I still believe more than ever that the experience of one human photographing another is something real. Something we feel.

Something you can’t fake, because it lives in the connection between people. That kind of authenticity? AI can’t touch it. It might copy the style. Mimic the look. But it can’t replace the moment. That’s human.

---

But while I believe in that, I’m also not blind to the reality. Jobs will go. That’s just a fact. Not maybe. Not someday. It’s already happening. Whole industries are shifting. What used to take ten people now takes one prompt. Whole creative departments are being gutted. Writers, designers, editors, even photographers, gone. Replaced by something that doesn’t sleep, doesn’t eat, doesn’t get paid. And it’s not even personal. It’s just business. Big, big billionaire business and once again, we’re all getting fucked. Which somehow makes it worse. It’s more about the power of this new technology.

Photography as we know it, has changed forever. Because it is no longer something that you can guarantee has some ‘vestige based on reality’ therefore whether it is good or not, you can never implicitly trust it again.

Fake is the new normal, that reality is what we have lost. Because whoever you are, when AI is good, made by someone that knows what they are doing, it can fool you. Plus it’s just going to get better at it.

So trust is now the discussion.

---

And when we’re talking about language models, I’m literally shitting myself. This stuff is more powerful and persuasive than social media. It reaffirms whatever you think or believe, because it wants to please you, to persuade you, to keep you using it. There are no guardrails.

And the same old lines are being fed to us: “It empowers creativity,” “It makes us more productive,” “It’s good for society,” “It connects us.” But as always, when it is free, you/we are the product. Honestly, it feels a 1000 times worse.

---

Some people are even using it for therapy and when has therapy ever worked when the therapist just agrees with you? Other people are using it like Google, which is absolutely nuts!

Having submerged myself in all of this means I can tell you: It’s addictive, it can be fun, it’s very frustrating, you need the patience of a saint to get good at it and it also makes you (or me) feel very guilty. At least, it made me feel terrible.

But it’s such an easy win, you can’t help but return to it, for lots of things.

Is it creative? Yes it can be. In fact, it can be an incredible creative partner, for lots of reasons. It definitely makes me think differently, outside the box and I can’t complain about that.

That’s probably the best thing about it.

---

Plus, it’s here. It’s not going away.

Whatever we want from it, it’s going to be part of our lives, whether we like it or not.

So over the next month, until FAIK comes out, I’ll be sharing bits and pieces of what I’ve learned. I’m not a natural advocate for it, or a big believer in it, but I do know I need to understand how to use it and to do it well.

SO even though I don’t love it, I will be a regrettable user. I don’t want to be left behind and I know it will make some of my photography better.

As I’ve said if you can’t wait, there’s a mini (taster) version of the magazine in the current issue of HUNGER.

If you have any questions, please message me.

I’m no “expert,” but as someone who’s self-taught, I’ll try to answer them.

---

Finally, I can safely say:

I’m still a photographer.

And I want to continue to be that for as long as the universe will let me.
